Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra are oral medications used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). You may also know them by their generic names, tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), and sildenafil (Viagra).

These drugs often help. Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra each work in similar ways. But there are also some differences, such as when you take them, how long they work, and what their side effects are.

Drug features

Cialis. Levitra. and Viagra are all in a class of drugs called PDE-5 inhibitors. These drugs work by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5. They also boost a chemical in your body called nitric oxide. This action encourages the muscles in your penis to relax. Relaxed muscles allow blood to flow freely so that when you’re aroused, you can get an erection. It also helps you maintain the erection long enough to have sex.

Levitra and Viagra stay in your bloodstream for about four to six hours. Cialis remains in your bloodstream for 17 to 18 hours or longer. The length of time a drug stays in your system may be important if you’re taking other medications.

I don't think there is a single "best drug" for all people with one symptom. It's important to talk frankly and thoroughly with a good doctor about what may be causing the ED since there are many, many things that could be causing it. Also, be willing to discuss whether erections are the real problem. Desire/libido may be the issue which ED drugs won't address. My greater advice would be to not look at ED as a singular problem but a symptom of some greater condition in your mind and/or body. Many are very easy to deal with and some are more serious. It's worth exploring deeper for your best overall health.

Since your doctor prescribed Viagra, you have an opportunity to try it before you commit to it as a long-term solution. You can break the tablets in half and see how that works for you first.

Both the primary desired effect (erections) and the side effects are temporary and pass in a few hours, so there's very little to risk. It's not worth worrying about. Also, relatively few people get bad side effects. The most common are red eyes (use some Visine), stuffy nose (use a little Afrin) and mild headache (take some Aleve or Ibuprofen). All are easy to deal with and they all pass.
